Burning Man 2005
Sunday 4 September 2005
Sitting here in a 60° F (15° C) San Francisco, after a week of 100° F (37° C) playa, I'm feeling chilled to the bone. Lila just woke me at 10:40; I could have slept for another four or five hours, but I'm excited to get to the pictures of the event (and not so excited about unpacking the van and cleaning it back to pristine, pre-playa condition). Here's how we spent the last week at Burning Man 2005:
Packing for Burning Man 2005, underway, concludes as the food is bought, the clothes and supplies are packed, and I borrow a sewing machine for decorating my Ranger uniform and making some flags for Kids Camp.
We head out to Black Rock City after picking Isaac up from elementary school. (Our thick-headed school district persists in starting before Labor Day even though we have no snow days. They were petitioned by Burning Man parents this last year to no avail. Sigh.)
Here's the view into our camp; in the middle is the living room (with the parachute pulled down against the morning sun). Our bicycles are scattered around the foyer.
Pulling up the parachute reveals this panorama into our camp. At right and left are the shade structure arms, in the middle is the van and the gazebo which holds up the parachute. Unseen, just in front of me, is a big blue tarp and a combined picnic table and chairs which collapse into a briefcase-sized space.
At night I did my Rangering shifts, which give me a chance to see more art.
In the evenings I make sure to return for some fortifying hot chocolate or chai...
Because the kids have caught some sort of stomach flu we strike camp and pack everything into the van in case we have to leave. By day's end they don't get better, so after the burn we head off-playa, hearts heavy.
To see everything I've done for this year's travelogue please start here.
