Burning Man 2005: Our kids bicycle the playa
Friday 2 September 2005
It was only a few weeks ago that our Isaac decided that he wanted the training wheels off his bicycle. Within 48 hours he was cruising around Golden Gate Park with reckless abandon.
This was great news for us because Black Rock City is big, and walking (and pushing a stroller) is a difficult way to see the playa. On bicycle our family's range is much extended. For Lila's recent 4th birthday we got her a Strawberry Shortcake pink bicycle; she's pretty good with it.
Here's the kids, just off their bikes, autographing the jumper of the signature guy; that's his art.
![]() Of course I had no idea that my bicycle's inner tubes had become brittle. Even though I'd inflated and tested the tires at home by the time we got to the playa they wouldn't hold any air. Oh, well, so it goes; I'm on foot. Here's my family, ahead of me, driving out to the galleon La Contessa (in the middle of the panorama).
![]() Here's Lila & Isaac on the main deck of La Contessa, wondering where last year's drum set might be hidden. (We never found it.)
![]() While Rose and Isaac look on, Lila explores using one of the ropes leading up to the sails as a swing.
![]() We'll return to La Contessa later on, but for the moment let's follow the kids around the playa, checking out the art cars.
