Burning Man 2005: The Man Burns Saturday 3 September 2005 After the La Contessa Treasure Hunt we went back and had a rest. We realized that Isaac was as lethargic as we've ever seen him. No fever, but certainly nowhere near normal. A small stomach-ache - unusual for him - was his only complaint. No constipation, and he's pretty hydrated. I guess he picked up a bug from one of the other kids. He enjoyed reading quietly in a nest we made for him in back of the van. Mid-afternoon Lila complained of a stomach-ache; whether she had gotten the same bug or was mimicing her big brother we weren't sure. Rose and I weren't keen on keeping the kids out here for another two days if they were coming down with something, so, after a bit of discussion, I started to break camp while she organized the clothes and food supplies. If the kids got much worse we could leave quickly, if they were okay we could make it another day, only sun shade would have to be found (but we loved Center Camp and had shade space in Kids Camp we could use). The kids didn't get much worse, but they didn't get better as the day ended. At the dinner potlatch Lila nibbled on some macaroni and cheese, but neither kid bounced back the way we expected once the heat had gone. We decided to pack up the van and head out after the Man burned. As we were getting ready for eDave's art car to take us to the burn both kids fell asleep. Wake them? We pondered it, but opted against it. A sick, cranky child is no fun at all. So rather than see the burn up close, Rose and I took turns watching it from 5:30 Street, near where Delirium Street crosses. This is the Man, arms raised, after the first volley of fireworks. ![]() ![]() ![]()
