Burning Man 2005: Passage / Clockworks
Wednesday 31 August 2005 (continued)
Our next step on our playa tour is Passage (by Karen Cusolito and Dan DasMann), known to the community as "Mother and Child". During the day water - representing the knowledge of the Burning Man customs - trickles from mother to child; in the evening it's a flaming liquid.
Approaching from the rear of the installation one sees the figures' footprints in the playa. An interesting touch.
Here's a wide-angle view, with the receiving ponds - for the dripping liquids - easy to see.
Lastly, a wide-angle view of the figures. The construction is just amazing; the fine textures make for a satisfying and slow grokking of the details.
Our next stop is at Clockworks (by Liam McNamara, San Francisco. This is a working clock, all of wood. Liam's says "The clockworks are a monument to the invention of measured time. This 30' clock tower contains, at its heart, a tangle of large wooden gears that slowly turn the hands of three clock faces. The movement is powered by two large weights that are wound up daily. A long swinging pendulum inside the tower regulates the beat. Three large bells made from welder's tanks hang inside the tower waiting for clock to strike its song hourly until the clock meets its end in a fiery climax."
That doesn't describe the numious feeling I get when in the presence of this clock. It's so homey, so hand-made, so perfect for the playa, and yet I would think the order and precision would make it clash with the wa of the playa. It doesn't.
(Here's Lila in front of Clockworks, to give a sense of scale.)
Clockworks occluding the sun; a backlit sort of thing.
Let's continue on to The Machine and other daytime art.
