Burning Man 2005: Dicky / The Temples
Wednesday 31 August 2005
Having checked out the art cars we turn our attention to the large-scale art of Burning Man.
Here we are out on the playa, looking back at Center Camp.
The photos on this page were taken on three separate trips onto the playa today: with our kids leading the way on bicycle, on eDave's art car, and on an Artery bus tour (as shown in this next photo).
Our first stop is the Dicky Box (by Logan Mirto & Christian Davies, San Francisco). Dicky, who felt both part of and apart from the Burning Man community last year, decided to spend this year in this box. Bathroom inside.
Here's Dicky chatting with his public. It was funny to see some of the women trying their wiles on the ultimate unavailable guy. "Do you remember me? I brought you the chocolates earlier in the week."
Dicky chats through several small holes cut into the plexiglass (perspex, for you British readers). There's now a screen to keep out some of the dust; a mid-week addition.
Our next stop on the playa is the temple, properly called the Temples of Dreams (by Mark Grieve and the Temple Crew of Petaluma, California). David Best, creator of the last three years' worth, chose to hand on the baton this year.
The first thing I noticed is that temples are much, much smaller than the monolithic temples of years past. The second thing that hits the eye is the reddish pink color; most pleasing. Here's our approach, from its port side.
Here's a better view, from the front of The Temples.
Lila poses in front of The Temples. She's wearing her sun shirt, also festooned with patches I just sewed on. She's goofing around with her sun hat, saying "I am wearing my hat, Papa."
A motley crew gets their photo taken at The Temples. This was a really popular photo spot; we saw this scene repeated every few minutes. The Temple Crew did a good job of making a compelling environment.
Let's move on to the Passage and Clockworks.
