Burning Man 2005: Kids Camp - A Day in the Life
After we'd been in Kids Camp a day or so I uncovered the flags I'd sewed at home. For a while we chatted about finding a portable generator to power eDave's auger, so we could place flagpoles (of which Zaphod had many) along the "shoulders" of the figure of the Man we'd made in camp, but that turned out to be too much work in the hot sun. And there were a half-dozen or so empty flagpoles near our campsite, on the Kids Camp boundary.
We borrowed the ladder that neighbors were using to erect their shade structure (we'd all been enlisted to hold poles during the process) and we manouvered it between the tents, trucks, and even yurts. Here's Lila guiding the threading of a hot pink flag onto a pole.
That done, Lila and I walk around our campsite, checking for MOOP (matter out of place; trash) to be picked up and double-checking the tension on the cables holding down our shade structures. Here, looking north, is our space with a huge smoke ring rising.
It looks like we've done our check just in time; here comes another wave of dust storms, again (strangely) from the north:
In the midst of the (relatively) high winds and driven dust I see a child on a bicycle. That's a lungful of yuck!
Where are my kids? Out of the maelstrom, in our tent space, entertaining a visitor who arrived with a mist sprayer. Here's the kids fussing over who gets the next turn:
That having been decided, Lila decides that it's time for me to get an earwash. That's cold!
One of the nice things about our space is how we set it up for the other children to come and play; a safe, supervised space. We get lots of kids and adults visiting. Here's Rose reading to Isaac, Lila, and our neighbor Chazz's son, Aidan.
Here's some of the kids reading to themselves and each other. We brought up a whole collection of our own and library books, which were pretty popular.
Finally, here's a photo Chazz took of a later moment in the reading session: Rose reading, the kids listening, and me taking a nap on the van seat (the "couch").
Speaking of Chazz, I wanted to make a special mention of his contribution to the health and safety of Black Rock City this year: my Rangering was powered by Chazz's tacos.
