Burning Man 2005: The Man
From our last vantage point at Center Camp we head up the main promenade to the Man. This year he's decorated in pink and green neon, an interesting and novel choice of colors. Here he is, atop the fun-house.
![]() As we approach the details of the fun-house become visible: the string of lights around the roof, the figure of Laughing Sally, and the color-shifting rainbow wall.
![]() Here's Laughing Sally up close, both amusing and terrifying. No wonder children have an issue with the circus.
![]() Getting closer to the Man I'm buffeted by the wind, and blanketed by driven playa dust. The dust picks up the glow of the lights, giving the night a saturated, diffused wash.
![]() The wind picks up, and it's getting harder to see the Man. I'm impressed that my camera is doing this good a job; my view isn't this good.
![]() This is my favorite photo of the evening, a panorama of the fun-house and the Man, with the dust visible in the left area.
![]() Now it's my turn to protect the Man; my last shift as a Ranger is about to start.
