Burning Man 2005: Center Camp
Let's see where our participant-citizens hang out: Center Camp.
Center Camp is a huge structure, the beating heart of the Burning Man community. Perhaps because I've taken so many pictures of it in previous years I forgot to really document it this year. Sorry.
One of the coolest spots in Center Camp this year was the Lego space, where kids of all ages worked on making complex structures and self-portraits with a grand collection of blocks.
Here are two charming stilt-walkers who passed through Center Camp.
Here's a panoramic view of Center Camp at night. I promise that next year I'll bring a tripod, with which these pictures will be crystal clear.
A slightly closer and clearer panorama of an entrance to Center Camp. The flags above are nicely visible.
The only vending (exchange of money) allowed at Burning Man are at the Center Camp Café (shown here) and at Camp Arctica, where ice is sold. Profits go to local schools, etc.
The Center Camp Café sells drip coffee, several espresso drinks, hot chocolate, and chai. (But it's nothing like the fantabulous Nub Chai from years past. We miss you, Nub Chai people.)
One of the performance venues in Center Camp was being used by a Celtic artist belting out drinking songs and social commentary.
Here's a barker, cajoling the audience into quieting down and finding a seat on the floor. He promises a bevy of talented performers, in period costume.
He was right. Here's a dance number in progress. I like this panorama because it's easy to see the structure of the building, along with the open-air construction.
Walking out of Center Camp, onto the circular path around it, we see the Black Rock City Post Office (BRC PO), open here late at night. This was the first year they didn't give out a lot of stamps; my collection will have a hole. Hey, I can scan in some of the previous years worth. I'll do it!
A fire spinner strolls on by.
Heading out to the Esplanade (remember, I'm on patrol) we pass by my favorite nighttime camp: a Japanese camp with a lighted entrance (which everyone seems to be calling "Pi") and a fence of lighted paper lantern balls.
As I pass I see someone posing under the Pi.
Let's head out to the playa to visit The Man.
