Burning Man 2005: La Contessa & Kids Camp Treasure Hunt
Saturday 3 September 2005
Avast ye scum-ridden weevil shaggers! The Capt'n o' La Contessa and his scalawags - in their breeches finest - want ye' and ye' wee ones to double-time o'er to the ship for a treasure hunt! If ye be late, the cap'n'll be keelhaul'n you and be grow'n barnacles on ye starboard knacker! There be some fine booty, tales 'b said. Yarr! Shiver me timbers!
Here's junior pirate Isaac, pondering our way. (I love the shadow cast by the crows nest and the lookout on duty.)
Here's the view as we make our way across the playa sea. Landlubbers dead ahead!
Here's much of the Kids Camp crew, stern-side. We, at the kids insistence, are at the bow.
Here's the lookout on duty standing above the crows nest. It's not easy piloting a ship when there are hundreds of moving targets ahead, some of which in high-speed art cars and personal vehicles.
Sailing past a shoal of porta-potties is the Star Car, perfect for figuring out our direction...
To our port side we see a seahorse limousine. Cruising along with us were sharks, fish, and other denizens of the deep.
Tacking this way and that, following the course charted by Polly the Chicken on the treasure map, we finally arrive at the spot marked by an 'X'. Thereunder was a treasure chest of sweets, which was greedily put upon by the hoarde of wee ones.
On the way back we had a special treat: one of the Kids Camp citizens is a trapeze artist, and she gave us a show as La Contessa headed back to our starting point.
Not only did she perform high above the audience, at one point she plunged almost to the deck surface, whipping herself back up to the safety of her perch at the last moment. So that's why she wanted us to clear the area below her of kids...
As we approached the end of our treasure trip she finished her routine and dismounted to the enthusiastic applause of the assemblage. It was great fun to watch.
We're coming to the end of our tour; pretty much all that's left is watching the Man burn.
