2004-02 Gran Canaria: Our first full day
Saturday 7 February 2004
Isaac is beside himself with excitement with our freezing swimming pools, even though no hotels bother to heat them. For a skinny kid he's much better with cold than I ever was. Lila is thrilled with the social milieu. Here she's schmoozing with a brother and sister from Chile; her name is Macarena. She's shivering, but continues to dog-paddle around the pool.
We have a breakfast planned with Omi Marga at 1430, which we just make. Lila has heard Isaac tell tales about helping Omi Marga during his last trip and she's hell-bent on helping out today. Omi Marga asks me to put her on the counter, and Lila gets her turn. Isaac is quite gracious about taking turns, sometimes an issue when something desirious is at stake. I'm proud.
After lunch we present Omi Marga with all the things we brought for her. Besides the usual raw macadamia nuts (4 bags), white miso soup (8 bags), dried unsweetened mango (12 bags), a jar of garlic & ginger mix from Hawai'i, honey from our 2003 Scotland trip, cloudberry preserves from IKEA, a bracelet for her recent half-birthday, a book of Castro photos for her upcoming birthday, a pair of disposable 35mm film cameras (as she's forgotten her camera in Germany), a big box of photos, art created by the kids destined for her refridgerator, and five colorful packages of napkins from IKEA (as Oma seems always about to run out of napkins) we were going to ship in a big box a few months ago.
The kids unveiled each item, one at a time, having Omi Marga close her eyes between each one. We're all exhausted.
We're planning on going to the Deutche Gasthaus this evening to enjoy Gisela & Rainer's semi-monthly chauteaubriand with fresh vegetables. We have to keep the kids awake, and so we head over to the C. C. Yumbo" to enjoy the tiny playground (unmaintained since last year, evidently).
Somehow the kids have absolutely incredible behavior during a long dinner. They each a bit of everything, sit at the table drawing and playing quietly, and interact with the folks at our table (Heinz, Ursula, and her daughter Heidege have joined us) politely and authentically. Everyone is thrilled.
Dessert comes, and Lila becomes one with her chocolate ice cream, as you can see. She lapped up every bit.
It's now 0316. Isaac isn't here; he's sleeping over at Omi Marga's. He was so thrilled to be invited, and so proud to be a big kid. As I left her place after delivering a sleeper, toothbrush, and book, he sent me off with a big hug. Then he returned to Omi Marga's bedroom, where the finishing touches are being made to her queen bed.
(I've got my cell phone nearby; she can call me if he demands to be returned to us. Somehow I doubt that'll happen.)
Next up, a day of beach play and sand castle construction on Playa del Inglés beach.
