2004-02 Gran Canaria: Paddy Murphy's, Playa del Inglés
Saturday 14 February 2004
Happy Valentine's Day!
Still no camera to be found. Sigh. I've dug through most everything, but no luck. I'll tear everything apart later. This is the shopping haven for Europeans, so there's a chance I'll pick up a replacement Casio Exilim EX-Z4U. (Actually, it won't have a 'U' in the product name; that was the crippled US version. The Japanese/European model also includes the ability to take digital video, if memory serves. We'll see if we wander down that path.)
We let the kids sleep in. They needed it. But by 1000 all were up and milling about. We did a quick morning routine and got going. This morning we're returning to Paddy Murphy's bar / restaurant, just on the other side of the C. C. Yumbo".
Paddy Murphy's is perhaps my favorite breakfast places here. It's just one of dozens of UKish breakfast places in Playa del Inglés, but the staff are friendly and reliable, the food is tasty and quick to arrive, and the location is convenient (for me) and shielded from the winds. (I find the never-ending stream of British soccer a bit trying, but it's just another bit of people-watching bait.)
It's a gentle day, we spend a good deal of time - several incredibly pleasant hours - playing in our hotel's kiddie pool with the toys given to us by the Norwegians (who are now back in the extreme cold). The sun is a bit milder than last week, the kids are happy, and there's a small boy with whom to share toys. (He's Spanish; the family lives on the ground floor.)
Once the shade covers the kiddie pool we change out of our bathing suits and head over to the playground at the C. C. Yumbo", where the kids play with Sammie, Jamie, and Tzarina. That's at least another hour.
We head over to Omi Marga for a home-cooked dinner. Charlie arrives with flowers of several types and sits with us while we eat. (The kids really behave. Isaac, who sits next to him, holds his hand. Lila flirts from across the table.) Charlie reminds us that we're invited to a footrace (in which he'll participate) and a festival in the interior of island; I'll have to check the car rental agencies downstairs and see what's available.
Omi Marga complains of the calima, the hot wind and fine dust / sand. She said she spent half the days with her eyes tearing. We were outside all day but didn't notice a thing. Certainly my contact lenses weren't bothered in the least. (I'll have to check the proper spelling and metereological usages of these terms; each local seems to mean something slightly different by them.)
There are cars available to us. I reserved one a few minutes before the agency closed at 2100. Excellent. More details tomorrow.
We head over to the supermercado Cordillo to grab some snacks for tomorrow's on-the-road breakfast. On the way back Isaac heads into Omi's building.
