2004-02 Gran Canaria: Maspalomas Money Blues
Monday 23 February 2004
First of all, a bit of housekeeping. Every once in a while Omi Marga asks us to bring along a pressure cooker sealing ring for her favorite cook pot (which we do, once we go through the gyrations of finding the model number on the pot (not the patent pending numbers, or the part number of the handle, etc.)).
Digging around her cabinets I found the ring we brought last year. Taking a photo of the package guarantees that the next time she asks I can just search this web site and I'll find the part number shown on the bottom left of the card: 09936. Done!
After breakfast we headed out to a boutique at which Omi Marga sometimes shops. They'd called, saying they had some things in her style. Bus stop; we're later than Omi thought; taxi stand; RIU Maspalomas Hotel; boutique.
The boutique, like the hotel, is depressing. They have a world-wide, aseptic, uniform feel to them; an insulation from the local culture. Why bother? There's a whole promenade, from Maspalomas to Mellonares, with generic vacation cafés, restaurants, boutiques, shops, etc. No Starbucks coffeeshops yet, but one is left feeling that it's only a matter of time.
From the RIU Maspalomas looking north-east towards Playa del Inglés.
Looking north-west, to the central mountains.
Isaac, ever font of elevators, was all smiles in this one.
Walking along the promenade, the El Faro Boulevard, this is the latest huge development currently being built. Its bigness is quite impressive. (You're seeing 180° degrees of view in this panorama.)
I turn around to see Omi Marga reading her mail, Lila, Rose, and Isaac relaxing after running on the wall all the way from the lighthouse.
On the way back to El Faro, Lila crashes. She's placed herself into the "I want to be asleep" position. She sleeps through most of our meal of chipirones at Restaurante Las Escaleritas.
On the way back from the climbing structure at the north-east end of the promenade, by the freshwater lake, I happen to notice the beauty of this shop. Primally reassuring.
Tomorrow we get sandy as we visit las Dunas de Maspalomas.
