2003 Gran Canaria: About the Canary Islands
![]() My family has had a presence is the Canary Islands since the mid-1970s. I spent many childhood summers and quite a few winters there. I was very lucky to see it grow from a mostly-unspoiled location to a full-fledged tourist powerhouse. While Gran Canaria can't compare to Hawai'i for beauty or variety, and of course it's much farther a trip for us from our home in San Francisco, we go back for the family connection. My grandmother still winters there, and it's a very comforting (and comfortable) place for me to be. Most special is seeing my children, Isaac and Lila, go through some of the same experiences as I did, and with the same wonderful woman in the same environment. I hope their memories of the Canaries are as pleasurable as are mine. This is what I had to say about the islands in 1999. Follow our trip by clicking on the links at left, or using the arrows below.
