2003 Gran Canaria: Spending Iberia's money

Friday 10 January 2003

Omi Marga wakes us at 10:00, an hour after we promised to come down to breakfast. I briefed her on last night's goings-on and said I'd bring everyone downstairs straightaways. Breakfast at Omi Marga's is always an adventure: one can be assured of a multitude of dining choices, including avocado on tomatoes with onions and spices; jams and marmalades; eggs; several kinds of meats, including the local hams, liverwurst, etc.; breads and rolls; several cheeses and quark (a soft, cream-cheese like spread); and much more. Every morning. Quite a celebration.

I called Iberia to ask about the luggage. They tell me to spend 300€ of their money to replace things needed for the next few days. So we go over to Yumbo and buy some tourist shirts, diapers, and other necessities.

Then we head to the most basic feature of Gran Canaria, the beaches. For many this is the thrill which becons them from a cold Europe. Isaac and Lila just love the ocean surf! Lila screams and shouts; Isaac runs in and out until he is literally blue in the face. I have to dry and cover him in several layers despite his shivered protestations.

Down the beach, along the Plaza Maritimo, we find a children's play area. Isaac climbs into a rope climbing structure while Lila enjoys the see-saw. Photos will follow; I didn't bring the cameras today.

Then we wander over to the beach store, and buy a few more things which were in our luggage. These beach stores just have a bit of everything a tourist might need. They're comforting and terrifying at the same time. Then we stroll the winding way back up to the Apartamentos Atlantis. Dinner at Omi's, after which the kids fall into bed without much fuss. They're exhausted by all the beach fun.

Later I make it back downstairs to the Deutchhe Gasthaus, where I meet with a Dutch couple who are leaving tomorrow. They look familiar. We chat, and it turns out we also met each other on a previous trip, although we can't figure out which.

They leave, and another couple alights. When they went to Ireland, their story goes, they ordered "Irish coffee" and received blank looks. On another trip they encountered the Irish coffee at the Buena Vista, in San Francisco, where the menu says that it was all made up by a restauranteur, and nobody in Ireland knows anything like it. I promise to get a copy of the menu for Gisela and Rainer.
