2003 Gran Canaria: el penultimo
Tuesday 28 January 2003
It's close to midnight, again. After the family falls asleep I make my rounds of several eateries in Playa del Inglés, where I type these web pages, edit the photos, and put the whole thing together (with the help of Userland Frontier).
My first stop is downstairs, at the Deutsche Gasthaus. Here's where I have a café leche español with Gisela and Rainer.
Then I head over to Het Hollandse Eetcafe, where I have some Dutch coffee and perhaps a sate (with the most amazing sate sauce I've ever had, even better than any in Amsterdam. Jan et Betty, says the sign. Jerry too. All are friendly, and it's my metaphysical café away from home. Thank you, all. Here's a panoramic view of the place:

![]() I learned something about colloquial Spanish yesterday: one may ask for a last cup of coffee, for example, but the term asked for is the penultimite (the one before the last) because - it was explained to me - only God knows which is your last cup of coffee. So, as I was finishing up last night, I asked for el penultimo café leche and all the locals at the café gave a resounding cheer of approval. Tomorrow we're off to airport, to fly to London).
