2004-02 Gran Canaria: mini-tren Gran Canaria, Playa del Inglés
Today starts with a quick trip to the west side of the C. C. Yumbo", where I try to find parts to repair and maintain several things in the apartment of "Omi Marga". Ferreteria Ronandez, the local hardware store, usually has whatever I need (or at least everything I can describe in Spanish) but today I stump them. I'll have to re-think my plans.
At the right side of this panorama a manual cement mixer may be seen; an all-in-one commercial espresso machine stands - for sale - just behind the customer entering.
It's about time we visit the mini-tren Gran Canaria, a favorite of my train geek son. On the Avenida de Italia, near the C. C. Kasbah, this five unit combustion-engine train circles Playa del Inglés on a course exquisitely designed to avoid almost everything of interest.
Unfortunately, at 1400 the driver decides that the half-dozen of us waiting for the ride just aren't worth the effort, and asks us to return an hour later. We enjoy a fine English breakfast (for lunch) at the Restaurant Marina, across the street. (Usually I'd be looking for something tipico, but this entire area is geared to the tourist's taste, culture be damned. Here's the manager serving coffee to our table.)
Here's the family enjoying a bananna split, still at the Restaurant Marina. Lila is having a hard time sitting through the photography, and is planning her attack on the postre.
Satiated, and with some time before the train is set to go, the kids go next door and play in an arcade.
Tomorrow we acquire some frutas y verduras in San Fernando.
