2004-02 Gran Canaria: Up and Down the Avenida de Alfereces Provisionales
Wednesday 11 February 2004
Today we'll be taking a stroll up and down the Avenida de Alfereces Provisionales, a street unremarkable except for the fact that it's the one in front of our hotel, the one on which I've been traipsing upon since I was about Isaac's age.
This is morning at room 313 at the Apartamentos Australia. Isaac, dressed in a sun-shirt and cool cotton pants, paces as I get ready. (He can be seen three times in this panorama.)
Rose takes a turn with the camera whilst I feed the children on our porch. Here I'm spooning avocado and tomatoes to the kids. On the table is one of several flavors of tasty, mild yoghurt. My favorite is coconut.
As we finish up Omi Marga stops by on her way to a favorite of the German community: the Backerei Zipf.
We leave our hotel, head downhill - toward the ocean - on the Avenida de Alfereces Provisionales, and walk for a few curves of the avenue until we arrive at the Zipf. This is where they get breads, bretzels, pastries, and cakes which seem to be right from Germany. In the last few years they've added a true café and a breakfast service. Here everyone is tasting a bretzel of the southern German style.
We continue down the Avenida de Alfereces Provisionales until we reach the beach. Omi Marga realizes that she didn't bring her beach shoes, etc., and heads back up the hill. We'll see her for dinner.
Rose's commentary on something, but of exactly what I can't be sure.
On the beach promenade the kids share one of the rides. Isaac loves making up stories about their journeys, just as Lila loves hearing (and copying) them. Lately she's been screaming "do you want to go to the pizzaria?" at me when she's driving.
We stop for a gelatto at the intersection of the promenade and the Avenida de Alfereces Provisionales. Looking over the beach the kids enjoy chocolate and strawberry. Lila covers herself from mid-nose to the toes of her socks.
Heading back up the Avenida de Alfereces Provisionales, with Isaac being Lila's seatbelts, both kids start conking out. They perk up during dinner, then crash shortly thereafter.
Tomorrow, another day on the beach, with an evening concert by Los Guanches Norteños.
