2004-02 Gran Canaria: Casa Poco, Maspalomas
Sunday 22 February 2004
We take the bus back to the Maspalomas beach, to meet with our friends from Scotland.
Before they arrive we all play in the climbing structure. Here's Isaac, lit with a fill flash. (I'm still experimenting with the new camera).
![]() Looking down I see Lila trying to clime out of Rose's reach. Just above her head I see the shadows of Isaac, climbing out of the perch, with mine balanced above his.
![]() Being the photographer means rarely appearing in images of the trip. Here's that rare one; me high above the sun-bathing crowds, lit by that fill flash. The gafas del sol are glacier glasses from REI, which have been absolutely invaluable on this trip. Bug-eyed but comfortable; that's me.
![]() I'm still routinely amazed at what this camera can do. Here's a photo taken almost directly into the sun: Isaac at the apex of the climbing structure. Most cameras with which I've played would have lost all detail in the front of the objects with such a bright light in the frame, but this photo is perfectly fine..
![]() My last photo from above shows Lila (and some of Rose) interacting with another child and mother. Lila has learned how to start swinging by pumping her feet (and to continue until she's going quite high) It's a skill many of the 5-year-olds here can't do, and it's led to a number of interesting conversations..
![]() Our friends arrive, and we enjoy a fine afternoon meal of piementos padrones and paella valencia at Casa Poco on the Maspalomas boardwalk. The food is tasty and satisfying, although I happen to think the piementos are better seasoned at Gisela and Rainer's. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the kids' running around is pleasantly tolerated. They made a lot of noise, the lot of them. Here is Mimi making a "bed" for Lila. Luckily the souvenier stand across the way closes at 15:00 on Sundays, so the kids had a ready play area. The dessert flan has a deep and almost smokey taste; interesting.
![]() Our friends are returning home tomorrow, so the wonderful routine of the last two days will change, as it so often happens on long holidays to tourist destinations. Next, we suffer from the Maspalomas Money Blues.
