Burning Man 2006: Leaving Black Rock City
Just as much as I love watching Black Rock City rise out of the dust, I hate how it melts away at events end. This is Center Camp as I start my last 12-hour shift.
And this is Ranger HQ at dawn, just as my shift ends. That's Ranger Rat Bastard minding the burn barrel with me. It was a very quiet last few hours. The temperature is just wonderful, but folks have decided to leave early. A steady stream of vehicles has been leaving since last night, never terribly busy but never ceasing either. A lot of the city is completely vacant.
The whole encampment broken down and packed away in a couple of hours, we start the RV and head off-playa. Actually Leori is driving, I'm already nodding off in the upper bed.
I wake as Leori parks near the Wigwam Restaurant, in Fernley, NV. It's a pleasant family-run breakfast joint, with lots of tasty food and warm running water for hands that haven't been truly clean (albeit frequently disinfected) for a week. It's a joy.
Our server kindly takes a photo of our crew. It's been a very nice trip, a nice year, and as exhausted as I am, I'm already looking forward to next year.
As we load the kids back in the RV for the ride home I notice the calming khaki color of playa dust on my tootsies. I'm going to enjoy that first hot shower, but I'll be missing this.
Please join us next year, at Burning Man 2007.
Yes, I know the previous and next arrows aren't working. Please use the last link in the paragraph above. I'm trying to figure it out. It's some obsucre bug in Userland Radio that they don't acknowledge and I'm investigating. Thanks for your patience. |
