Burning Man 2006: Kidsville
The main entrance into Kidsville (formerly Kids Camp), early in the week. A few days later every free spot was filled, and we had to start turning people away.
Inside our RV, our first year with an RV, with (from left) Rose, Jessica, Leori, Lila, and heading out of the panorama, Isaac. This was an unbelievably civilized way of doing Burning Man: everything in its place, naturally cool without air conditioning, beds, etc. Highly recommended.
Something we learned this year is the utility of a bicycle trailer. It makes it much easier to bring small children around the large city. Here's Isaac, proud as ever at his riding skills, and Lila, hydrating inside the trailer. We have to get some of these for next year, perhaps one per bike would give us kid- and cargo-carrying capability.
The Kidsville burn barrel, a social center from dusk on. The kids love to toss cardboard and wood into the fire, and the greater the roar of the fire the better. Isaac has shown real interest in the pyromaniacal arts :-)
Isaac, late at night, on a trampoline. The orbs you see all over the picture are airborne playa dust particles reflecting the camera flash.
I can't remember why cat-faced Lila is unhappy, but I love the photo and the body language
Rose & Isaac make art car kissy-face. That's what Burning Man is all about to me, connections. Here the hustle drops away and one must concentrate on what's essential, like kissy-face.
Lila & Papa have an art car cuddle. Whatever the problem was a few pictures back seems to have been solved to Lila's satisfaction.
This is a breakfast time in our RV, with all the kids, including a friend of Leori's and her child, both of whose names I've completely forgotten. Having a fridge just makes everything that much easier, including copious amounts of cold fresh milk for the wee ones.
Here are best friends Lila & Saffron riding high atop an art car. Reasonably inseperable, these two jokers ran our two roosts.
Isaac & Jessica show off some pirate dubloons they got from a visiting band of marine terrors. Those coins never left them, always in a pocket or on a near-by surface. Now I'm sure they're close at hand in the house.
Looking from the Center Camp Café outwards, that's Ranger HQ (at left) and Medical. This is where I spend most of my non-family time, at least this is my roost. I'm sent all over Black Rock City, in the city and out on the open playa. A Dirt Ranger's life is never done, but always fun.
Sheesh! The things kids learn at Burning Man. Here's Lila, playa cheerleader. She's exposed to bigger kids, and behaviors other than we're used to. So now she's got pompoms.
Racecar driver Isaac pilots around Kidsville with passengers. Here's a repeat customer. There was a lot of social machinations around the car; the kid who owned it didn't share so well with others, but Isaac worked on him endlessly until everyone had turns with it (and everyone was happier about it). Kidsville, where the kids raise each other :-)
OMG, cousin Judy has found us yet again! That woman has instincts! The kids are so excited when she appears out of nowhere. This year she's brought little knick-knacks for the wee ones, which are immediately played with (and don't get put down for weeks).
I have no idea why Kidsville Mayor Zaphod looks so dour, he's usually much happier. Rose seems to have known I was there, so I'm doubly confused...
Likewise with the moon jumpers, currently being worn by Isaac. After a while everybody shared everything, toys and their owners were long parted, and nobody really seemed to care. Even special toys were passed around.
Lila, after bedtime, taking a turn on the racecar. Because we always place our camp in the center of Kidsville - urbanites that we are - there's always a lot going on around us. Just the way we and the kids like it.
When all are asleep, I take off for another nighttime tour around Black Rock City.
Yes, I know the previous and next arrows aren't working. Please use the last link in the paragraph above. I'm trying to figure it out. It's some obsucre bug in Userland Radio that they don't acknowledge and I'm investigating. Thanks for your patience. |
