Burning Man 2006: Black Rock Rangers
While Rangers must be in just enough "uniform" to be recognisable, that's a pretty wide spectrum, as you'll see. Hat, laminate around the neck, logo on the back of the shirt.
Ranger Outpost Berlin, another hive of wretched scum and villany. I just love the quality of the light around here. (Outposts Berlin - at 3 o'clock - and Tokyo - at 9 o'clock - are named mnemonically: 'b' for "bottom of the city, 't' for "top of the city").
Ho! It's guys from the Emergency Services Department (ESD), formerly a branch of the Rangers, refueling in the commissary. After 8 or 16 hours on duty it's amazing how refreshing something - anything - hot can be.
To be a Ranger requires that you've attended the event before, sucessfully completed a Ranger Orientation Meeting (ROM), and undergo mentoring on-playa (during which they're known as Alphas, or Alpha Rangers. Graduates are invited to "jump the rebar" at a 16:00 daily ceremony. Here's our newest batch of recruits.
My silhoutte, featured in the blockbuster film BM2K3.
Lila and Alpha Ranger Domo, cruising around Kidsville. Lila was really into riding things, and she likes Domo's company. He's always a welcome addition to our camp.
Ranger Outpost Tokyo, in the rays of the setting sun. It looks terribly quiet, almost peaceful. That'll change in a few hours time :-)
Here's my long-time (think 1998 onwards) Ranger buddy, Lefty, and I standing in front of the main trampoline in Kidsville. There's just so much to be said about Lefty, a steadfast compatriot over many years of the event (and in-between, in San Francisco as well); what I can say I'll do on his own page.
The most notable "big art" of the year must have been Uchronia, universally known as the Belgian Waffle.
Yes, I know the previous and next arrows aren't working. Please use the last link in the paragraph above. I'm trying to figure it out. It's some obsucre bug in Userland Radio that they don't acknowledge and I'm investigating. Thanks for your patience. |
