Burning Man 2006: There's No Place Like Home
Just as a plane trip doesn't seem real to me until I'm seated, awaiting take-off, no Burning Man seems real until I'm in line to get into the city. The vehicle search by the Gate & Perimeter folks always seems to take so long; I'm so antsy.
This year they're having the kids ring the bells at the entrance. The peals ring through the night. The kids love it, hitting it again and again.
It's almost 02:30 by the time we're parked in the spot we want. There was a lot of RV back-and-forth on top of the lines laid down in Kidsville, but we're ready and won't have to move at all tomorrow. Everyone is asleep by now, and so I grab my pre-packed Ranger gear and head out to HQ for a radio, battery, and to sign into my first graveyard shift. Standing in the Center Camp Café seems unreal after a year away.

It's shift change at Ranger HQ. Lots of hugs and quick catching up from old friends and new acquaintances. I've known some of these people for a decade now!
At Kidsville Lila and Isaac are giddily enjoying the trampoline that sits alongside the main drag, by the Auburn (CA) campers. They've got their hands full with all these silly kids.
We take our bicycles out to the Temple, where both kids spend time writing thoughts onto wooden plaques. We'll nail them up high and they'll be immiolated at weeks end.
Isaac poses in front of one of his offerings. It's hot out here, it's midday, but the kids have their own hydration packs and are keeping the liquids going without much prompting from Rose or me.
Really getting into the whole writing-to-be-burned thing, Isaac collects a few more pieces of wood. Then he chooses to be generous and walks around, handing them out to people he judges in need.
Next, we enjoy the trademark dust and whiteouts for which the event is so well-known.
Yes, I know the previous and next arrows aren't working. Please use the last link in the paragraph above. I'm trying to figure it out. It's some obsucre bug in Userland Radio that they don't acknowledge and I'm investigating. Thanks for your patience. |
