Burning Man 2006: 05/18 - Black Rock Arts Foundation 'Art on Fire!' Festival

 Thursday 18 May 2006
Burning Man is a recurrent part of our family's life, and this year should see another visit into the desert for us.

My Burning Man season has started much earlier than usual: a call went out on the Ranger ALLCOM email list asking for volunteers for Art on Fire!, a three-day fire arts exposition put on by the Black Rock Arts Foundation. (This ought not be confused with the "Fire Arts Festival" put on by The Crucible in West Oakland annually since 2000.)

"Of course," I replied to the request. Ranger Lefty did the same, and for the first two days we're planning on being a team. Packing presents the usual challenge, for Rangers must be prepared for full sun and pouring rain, with driving winds inbetween.

The event is taking place at Candlestick Park, at the south-east edge of San Francisco. We got there in late afternoon, picked up our radios and event tee-shirts, and headed out.

Here's the Bizarro Sagharo:

Stilt people wrapped in yards of bright red cloth can't be all bad, can they?

Ranger Lefty poses with someone ready to take on a bit of fire. That's a French firefighter's helmet, a very cool acquisition.

The Fire Cyclone. This burned hotter than almost anything I've experienced. Check out the serious fire suits of the two fire tenders.

A couple more photos of the action on stage. Jump ropes of fire plus in-air action from the trapeze in back.

The parade leaves the stage area to head around the entire festival grounds.

Fireworks, to end the day. There's more in the next two days...

The Rangers relax at the bar after sweeping all the visitors out. You don't have to go home, you just can't stay here.

The festival continues!

Yes, I know the previous and next arrows aren't working. Please use the last link in the paragraph above. I'm trying to figure it out. It's some obsucre bug in Userland Radio that they don't acknowledge and I'm investigating. Thanks for your patience.
