Burning Man 2006: 05/19 - Black Rock Arts Foundation 'Art on Fire!' Festival
Friday 19 May 2006 | |
We're back for a second day of fire and fun. We're ready to Ranger before dusk; it's a cool foggy afternoon. We're wondering whether the chill will drive away weekend celebrants. A propane cannon starts the goings-on.
Media Mecca: registering commercial-use video cameras. They're always a great bunch of folks to see.
Ranger Mickey, yours truly, posing with Ranger Damon, who I've known since we set up our campsite at Burning Man 1996!
Ranger Lefty with a new friend.
Ranger Trapper and ??? under the fire arch.
Oh, it's the Emergency Services Department (ESD) guys, heading out on patrol.
More Rangers arrive as night falls.
A fire calliope duo, not often seen.
The inside of the Ranger / ESD tent.
Swirling water with fire in the whirlpool.
While I spend some time doing gate security I take a photo of what it looks like when you arrive at the site. Gate is ahead of you.
Pick up or purchase your tickets here.
It was almost impossible to catch the propane cannons going off at the same time as the fire arch maxed out; this was as close as I got.
The guys from Yojimbo Security Services, who handled the security side of things, were a unbelievably fantastic crew. Competent, can-do, and downright good-humored. Let's get them back again, please!
I just love Camille's unicorn shirt; look carefully.
El Diablo, by Jack Shroll. A military jet turbine engine modified to project colored flames high into the night sky. Loud and beautiful!
Back to the Fire Cyclone. I got as close as I could stand in order to take these photos.
Ranger Wicked reacts to that blast furnace feeling. The cyclone is only about twenty feet away from him. Doesn't sound too close, does it? Try it!
The crowd couldn't get enough of the heat. I thought it'd melt some of their polyester accountrement.
Rangers are a second line of defense; the heat does a pretty good job of keeping the crowd back. The heat through our shirts was intense beyond belief. Not uncomfortable, but impressive.
The festival continues!

Yes, I know the previous and next arrows aren't working. Please use the last link in the paragraph above. I'm trying to figure it out. It's some obsucre bug in Userland Radio that they don't acknowledge and I'm investigating. Thanks for your patience. |
