Burning Man 1996: Rave Camp It was someone's bright idea to move Rave Camp away from the main event area, so as to keep nighttime disturbances to a minimum. This was a massive mistake, as it resulted in ravers - minimally clothed and already dehydrated from dancing and dosed on Ecstasy - wandering on the playa. The situation could have been improved mid-event by the placement of a very bright red light at rave camp and a bright green light at the main camp, but such suggestions were ignored, and we had ravers all over the place. Driving was allowed, too, and so we had cars flying at triple-digit speeds and ravers walking around. It was a miracle that the former never met the latter. The Ranger search and rescue team was busy. I never was assigned a nighttime Ranger patrol of Rave Camp, and a mile or two walk in the dark for the experience of altered people and unbelievably loud music just didn't justify another trip (for me), so we'll have to do with daytime pictures. Here's one corner of Rave Camp. I really liked the smaller version of the Man. The rope structure looked so ephemeral and so right in red that I needed to take a photo. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
