Burning Man 1996: Building Our Camp
After parking our vehicles in a semi-circle, our first order of business was to raise the structure designed by Stig and Joel. We started by making the platform holder and then adding the four legs.
![]() Even though it had been almost completely assembled once before, in San Francisco, recent changes required the four of us to tweak each connection.
![]() Luckily we had battery-operated power tools, and some elbow grease for the manual tools.
![]() With the platform supports in place we flip the entire thing over and hang our combined weight from it to drive the rebar in the feet down into the playa.
![]() Repeat for each corner. Extra points for grunting and yelling.
![]() Then Stig and I tighten each of the corner bolts again. It does look like we have some sort of playa snowshoes, but sadly it's only a folding camp stool.
![]() It holds our weight! We test this on an unsuspecting Stig. He survived.
![]() Yea! The hard part is done. The rest is cosmetic, and will take much less time and sweat.
