Burning Man 1996: The Obelisk

Here we're looking away from Merchant Cam towards the Man while standing on the Esplanade. The art installation on the walkway is the Obelisk of Books.

Looking something like a pagoda with a base of books and dirt, this was a must-visit stop for the participants. A lot of speculative conversation was started by the blending of permanence and flammability :-)

Another view, this time looking back towards camp. I can't remember if the translucent "fishtank" was filled with gasoline, or that was just my impression. Note the base made of playa bud, cracking as the soaking material is dried.

Lastly, a comment about the wooden planking around the Obelisk, which served beautifully as a bench. Practical art wins.

Let's move on; I'm hungry!
