Burning Man 1996: Shampoo Camp

This is so completely mind-blowing that I can barely believe it myself. This wonderful woman brought a huge amount of shampoo, conditioner, and water up to the playa for the sole purpose of giving to the participants. What a great gift! After a few days (or for us Rangers, since we arrived early, almost a week) there's no good way to remove playa dust...

Ranger Rosie and I were strolling around when we came across this well-designed playa-proof camp. Note the clever use of condiment bottles to hold the supplies. This is the woman getting a shampoo when we arrived.

And this was the woman who was in line in front of us. I had short hair; I can barely imagine how happy she must have been to have her long hair cleaned.

And here I am, enjoying a clean scalp more than I ever could have imagined. Note the continued clever use of restaurant supplies to pour the water. Bonus points were for the exceedingly clever use of the wading pool (in the background) to heat up the water.

Washed and very, very happy, I have a playa dance with my love, ending in this grand dip.

Rosie documented my dressing. The shirt has a crackle pattern like the playa surface; it was the Ranger search and rescue tee-shirt.

Thank you so very much, shampoo lady! Now that my head was clean I needed a shower...
