Burning Man 1996: The Playa
The first thing I notice about the surface of the Black Rock Desert - the playa - is how uniformly baked and cracked it is, and how flat. In all directions it's the same. Getting lost here would be easy. You've already seen what happens when the playa is churned by speeding cars.
![]() The playa is softer than I expect. A layer of dust makes walking barefoot - my favorite mode of transport - a pleasure. [WARNING: the playa surface is very alkaline and exposed skin must be washed and moisturized daily.]
![]() Even in the noonday sun the playa is comfortable. I thought I'd be walking on a sheet of rough pumice (like I saw in Iceland) but instead I feel as though I'm walking on a carpet. It's not too soft to use alternative transportation, say a skateboard.
![]() There aren't many others on the playa yet. I'm surprized. I turn back to our crew to begin erecting the structure.
