Burning Man 1996: Hula Camp
The playa is a place where the sun bakes the water out of you. Shade is a good thing. So after we filled up with sushi (and salty soy sauce) we realized we needed a place to hide from the midday sun. It was about then that we stumbled across Tony's Hoop Heaven, aso known as Hula Camp.
Here's Tony, working on the decorations. The evening winds were doing a job on the flimsies, he said.
![]() Here's Seth enjoying the shade. We poured some of our drinking water into hour hats, which is almost as good a feeling as being sprayed with cool mist.
![]() Here we are, enjoying the shade and the togetherness. Damon is at left, Seth in the middle, and I'm at right. I'm not sure who is in the dark green tee-shirt.
![]() The crowd forms as Seth threatens to unleash a hula show...
![]() ... and as he shows off his Olympic-caliber technique we all relax and go back to thinking about our next sushi meal.
![]() We make it back to camp, rest, and head out to rave camp. [Yes, I know these images are small. Somehow, in the mists of time, the originals seem to have been replaced by some old thumbnails. If someone reminds me when I happen to have some free time I'll dig through backups to find the originals. -- Mickey]
