Nudity & Drugs |

Burning Man 2000 Nudity When I'm asked about Burning Man it's usually something from a sensationalized account in some newspaper. (Understood; they have to sell copies, and analysis of the tax code gets boring.) Titillating questions usually center around drugs and nudity at Burning Man. About drugs I know next to nothing, but here's what I do know: Burning Man takes place in Nevada, a conservative state with very conservative drug laws. It's not allowed. You transport and use drugs at your own risk. That having been said, I should mention that the local law enforcement (Washoe County sheriff, Pershing Country sheriff, Nevada State Police, etc.) don't go out of their way to look for drugs, but uncover them when participants (1) use them in plain sight or (2) do something to attract law enforcement, which continues into a search. Remember, once you've engaged the law they're duty-bound to follow their procedures. So the best rule, should you choose to partake of any drug stronger than caffèine or alcohol, is to do so in the privacy of your own space. That having been said, if you're going to take drugs, please take the drugs with which you're familiar. The physically stressful environment of the playa is no place for your first go-round with mescaline, peyote, and that heroin-whiskey cocktail about which you read... Nudity is another matter entirely. I'm of the opinion that exposure to nudity is far less damaging to people than the cultural stress of worrying about it. (Or as it's said in humor circles, like the Baptists worrying about sexual intercourse in any positions other than missionary might lead to dancing.) The vast majority of participants are secure enough in their body image and sexuality to not have a great issue with nudity. The end result is something like this: if you want to wear less or no clothes, do so. If you don't want to see skin, stay in your private space (or away from Burning Man), rather than imposing your demands upon others. Here's a typical Burning Man scene, a couple walking up to the Man. Whether you find it refreshing to see people fighting the tyranny of clothing in our modern culture or disgusting to see people shamefully bearing themselves, it's important to remember that it's all within your cranium. ![]() ![]() ![]()
