Burning Man 2000 Esplanade

The Esplanade is the walkway between the camping area and the open playa. Pedestrians only. Let's see what we run across today, shall we?

Every year I seem to find this vehicle somewhere in camp, this year he's secured a spot with one of the theme camps (although I don't see the theme part (yet)).

A bottle, fallen from the sky. Clever, no? And inside...

is a very cozy lounge. Although this structure let a cool breeze in, it also allowed the driven dust to blow through. Unlike...

this structure, which was perhaps not as inviting as the bottle, but more dust-proof, especially when the parachute was lowered on all sides.

The breezes are the power source for lots of playa art. Here's a mobile, cranking around, making tinking noises.

A close-up of the parts within.

Here's the avenue to the man, with the art placed on each side of the walkway.

I like the scale of the art. At night this sculpture had burning liquid dripping from the eyes.

The breeze inspired all sorts of wind-socks, this one big, ...

... and this one small. Lots of airborne toys present this year.

Oh, no, a dance has broken out.

I'm not sure what he's trying to affix to this art car.

A propane cannon caliope. You just don't see that on the city streets often enough :-)

Sunset is one of my favorite times to be on the playa. Time to sit zazen for a while. REMSA - Reno Emergency Medical Services Association - on their way to help someone.

Bicycle Camp, where you can fix whatever ails your bike.

A by-product of the weather and the sun are the variety of hats worn as protection. Sombreros surely keep the rays from the skin, but you really have to tie 'em down against the wind.

A Suess-esque L. A. Raiders hat.

I guess sometimes a summer-weight linen seersucker suit is de rigeur.

Bike rider in the foreground; DTP truck in the background. Why did I take this picture? Maybe I was thinking of transportation, whether mechanical, ...

... or motorized ...

... or mythological.

Why did the chicken cross the playa?

Lampshadewear. Yikes.

I guess lampshades are a good a segue as any; here's the lamplighters.
