2005-01 Gran Canaria: Towards San Augustin

Sunday 2 January 2005

We're at that stage in a family vacation where we're playing mostly on a routine, varying it but not pushing out to new things. After all, we came here to be with Omi Marga.

This morning, as most, starts out with a trip downstairs to the Supermercado Cordillo. I like doing a bit of shopping every few days rather than planning meals two weeks in advance.

I had to get oranges (for the kids to make orange juice), and then the newspaper rack caught my eye.

Here's a child holding [what I understand to be] a picture of her mother, missing in the tsunami.

As we're making breakfast I'm surely grateful for what we have (and for what I don't have to deal with).

Lila was really happy to see that Omi had made "eggs and spam". I tried to explain that it was speck, rather than spam, but one has to give up after a while. We loved the meal.

Somehow, somewhere, Isaac got the idea that he really wanted to wear three pairs of sunglasses.

And, of course, what the big brother does the little sister must imitate.

Omi Marga doesn't want to take the bus to Maspalomas, but rather wants to walk north towards San Augustin. And that's what we do, along the seaside promenade. Here we are somewhere behind the Tropical, at one of the tourist restaurants (which was remarkably better than I'd expected). In the background, upper left, you can see the Playa del Inglés beach and Punto Maspalomas.

The feral dogs of the Gran Canaria of my youth have been replaced by feral cats. The kids love them.

The kids walk along the promenade the hard way, climbing over every obstacle. Lila stops at each of these lightpole towers, grabs the base with her hands, heaves her body over the top, slides to the other side, and downclimbs. It's exhausting to watch :-)

Omi Marga is all used up, so we're on our own for dinner. We grab a cab and head into the foothils to La Cabaña Park

Here's Lila chowing down on datilles con bacon (dates in bacon), chorizo, and some papas fritas (fries).

Each evening we're out we meet interesting people, and great children. Both Isaac and Lila absolutely adore ten-year-old Vanessa, seen here with swingin' Isaac.

Lila was thrilled to have an English-speaker with whom to play. Vanessa was very patient with both kids.

This was a celebration of Charlie's birthday. At right is Gisela, Charlie's wife. She's been ill for several years now, and this is the first time we've seen her on this trip.

This seems to be a very fitting photo with which to end today's entry. The kids love this dinosaur, which at € 0.50 per ride isn't cheap. What's a papa to do?
