2004-12 Gran Canaria: Playa Amadores

Thursday 30 December 2004

Good morning! Today Omi Marga has suggested that we head to the sunnier side of the island to escape the wind. So we've targetted Playa Amadores, a newly-built beach. But before we go we host a full breakfast in our apartment, including the tastiest tomatoes we've had in many months.

Speaking of tomatoes, this is all that's left of the tomato farms that stood on the hills near Maspalomas for generations. A bit of real-estate speculation and farms and farmers were displaced faster than you can say McMansion. I used to walk through these farms when I was a child here. Sigh.

Lila took a nap along the way; Isaac was very proudly taking care of her. He likes being Big Brother.

At Playa Amadores Isaac ran repeatedly to the water's edge, taking stones from the surf and making a wall around where Omi Marga was napping.

Here's Rose, Lila, and Isaac in the surf. It seemed warmer, but it might have been the hot sun and lack of strong breezes. It was certainly worth the bus ride to get a good day at the beach.

Here's a view of Playa Amadores from the end of the jetty. That's the beach in front, with two hills in back (which are getting quickly covered with more hotels and bungalows).

Lila decided that she needed a nap after all the time in the cold water. So she peeled, lay on some clothes, pulled my sweatshirt over her, and closed her eyes. Moments later she was out.

On the way back to the bus stop we pass fields of bougainvilla. Beautiful, just beautiful.

Instead of heading back to Playa del Inglés we stop at Puerto Rico. Omi Marga is heading on, but the kids and I are full of tourist energy! We start at the playground. I have no idea why Rose is looking like a bull-fighter...

Both kids absolutely love these funny swings and the gear thingies atop the poles which rock back and forth with the swings.

We're pretty hungry; it's been hours of beaches and buses and playing. We walk down towards the beach, across a busy street, along a winding path past the soft ice cream stand. Soon we're at the beach tiendas, trying to decide in which one to eat. We're pretty happy with Restaurante Venezia, so we're back. Rose and I do the local thing, the kids share pizza and spaghetti.

While we're in the restaurant we spot a couple and their kid playing amongst the mostly abandoned beach-chairs.

Soon we're sitting with them, sharing beer and vodka. They're Scots. Isaac and their son are soon happily rampaging all over the place; Lila wants to join them but they're not in the mood most of the time. Here's a quiet moment, everyone sharing potato chips.

They leave and we head back up to the playground. The kids spend some time on the wiggly animals. Then they have an idea...

...head over to the amusement park and do some rides! So Isaac gets to drive Lila around in an electric car, and Lila tries the kid trampoline (after having watched Isaac on the big kid one)

Both kids are really proud of themselves as we board the bus and head back to Playa del Inglés. I think both were asleep before we headed around the very steep grade and tight turn leading out of Puerto Rico.
