2004-12 Gran Canaria: Los Guanches Norteños
Thursday 23 December 2004
Today started out quietly, as one hopes vacation days will. Lila continued nibbling on Zweiback toast to settle her iffy stomach. She loves the sweet taste and loud crunch of the Zweiback.
A little while later we've upstairs squeezing orange juice with Omi Marga. Here's a nose rub in-between orange halves.
Big brother Isaac makes it up. He has some oranges to do as well.
We sit down to eat. Isaac points out some parachutes coming down near the Playa del Inglés beach. It's a pretty impressive sight. You can't see Omi in this picture, but you can see a picture of her at right.
After I do the dishes we head down to 306, where the kids play Go Fish (although where they learned the rules I don't yet know). They're using Isaac's birthday set of Thomas the Tank Engine cards.
I'm cooking dinner this evening, so while the kids are enjoying the C. C. Yumbo playground I'll head over to one of the two supermercados and buy supplies. On the walk over I see these Joshua trees festooned with lights and gift boxes.
No luck. Neither has the supplies I need. I'll have to head back to C. C. San Fernando. On the way we stop at Het Hollandse Eetcafe, where Betty takes great care of us. (She's at right, bringing a dutch coffee over to our table.)
At C. C. San Fernando the kids are most impressed with the homey decorations of this apartment's porch. Isaac is reminded of Münster and tells Lila "that's where Omi Marga lived." It does have a similar feel.
The kids make an elaborate directorial debut in the composition and content of this picture. Every aspect is painstakingly explaned to Papa, who proceeds to snap as ordered.
Shopping done, lunch done, we return to the playground for an hour of digging in the sand with Aaran and his father, Ian; Glaswegians both.
I head back to 306 to cook a dinner of chicken breast wrapped in jamon serrano sautéed in butter and garlic, octopus ink spaghetti, and some absolutely dreadful beans and peas from England. (Suministros Frutas Y Verduras was closed by the time we got there.)
While Rose dresses the kids in layers - it's a freezing 14° C (57° F) - I do the dishes. Then we head out to see Los Guanches Norteños at the Café de Paris. (I recorded their three sets this evening; hopefully I can offer the files here shortly. Prod me if I've forgotten to do it.)
Lila can't keep her eyes open past a few songs and falls asleep in the highchair she selected. I transfer her to the stroller.
Isaac takes Omi Marga and Rose to the trampoline, which neither of them has seen him on, and demonstrates both backward and forward flips. He's extremely proud of himself when he returns.
The rest of the family gone, Omi Marga stays to listen a bit longer.
