2004-12 London: Covent Gardens
Wednesday 15 December 2004
Getting the kids to bed after yesterday's attempt to synchronize them to the London schedule was a debacle. The kids' inner clocks are completely screwed up. They nap for a bit, are up in the middle of the night. Rose feeds them from her bag of treats. Fiber and fruits and nuts. It's the wee hours of the morning before they get back to sleep, and it's work to keep them sleeping until the morning (when they sleep in 'til 10.00).
We're rested but famished. So we head to the Café in the Gardens, in Russell Square park, just around the corner from our hotel. It's a wonderful glass-enclosed structure with a grand view of the greens.
Inside it's warm, and the staff are welcoming and pleasant. We devour several very tasty British breakfasts, Isaac having a bit of everything and Lila working her way through baked beans and "bangers and spam" (really English bacon).
Sated and pretty pleased with ourselves, we head out to Covent Gardens Marketplace. I pose.
As we stroll through we see a violin quartet playing holiday favorites. They're hamming it up, and the audience frequently laughs.
Soon we've made our way through the buildings and are at Isaac's favorite place in the whole world: the London Transport Museum.
The family is inside, and I've come back out to photograph the window of the caffè Nero at the museum? Why? Well, because there's a webcam mounted therein (marked by the red circle I've added), the display from which I keep live on my desktop. This is the first time I've been here since I discovered the webcam. I wave at it. Probably should hold up a paper with my address on it...
This is my favorite advertisment for the London Underground's connection to Heathrow Airport. It's been catching my eye for years now.
One of their favorite play-areas is an early train, including an engine in back and a special driver's car in the front. Here you see Isaac and Lila peering out from one of the passenger carriages.
Whilst the kids are taking a moment with one of the Thomas the Tank Engine play-tables I check my phone messages. (My third Handspring Treo 180 has suffered the same fate as its predecessors: the poor hinge engineering has caused it to become useless after less than a year of gentle use. I'm now using an Ericsson R380 World PDA phone, one of the first.)
I get notification that an ex-co-worker is nearing.
