2004-12 Gran Canaria: Our Anniversary & My Birthday
Tuesday 21 December 2004
I begin my birthday celebration a few moments after midnight, when Gisela & Rainer start up the singing dolls yet again.
This morning, the kids up early, we head over to Finnegan's. Beverly is still there, and waits on us. The kids got the Cartoon Network turned on (all the TVs at once).
But before all that happens we have to wait. We get there about 09.45; nothing happens before 10.00. When Beverly arrives and opens up there are still some morning chores to be done. Isaac helps drag the outdoor tables to their places. Note the tongue of concentration :-)
He follows Beverly back inside for some more tables. Lila is already captivated by "Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends" television show. On the table are Isaac's (school-required) travel journal, Lila's spiral-bound drawing book, and a set of magic markers. We've been keeping his journal up-to-date, what with some drawings and text daily. Perhaps I'll add them to these pages.
After a fine Scottish breakfast Lila scales up the entrance handrail "in her fancies" (patent letter shoes). She's fearless, and getting moreso day by day.
Today is my birthday. At Omi Marga's apartment we celebrate in song, sweets, and presents. Here's something Rose told me later:
After we opened your presents Lila asked me to come with her to the other side of the house, to the privacy of Omi Marga's bedroom. We went inside, and Lila said she had something to say that she didn't want Omi to hear.
Lila: Why did Isaac get so many gifts on his birthday and Papa got less gifts on his birthday?
I think Lila was worried about you, and she didn't want either of you to know she was worried about your feelings.
After the wife and kids went downstairs Charlie, Omi, and I continued sipping the Casissene black currant liquor. Omi regaled us with a pre-Nazi song about "keeping the banner high", a song that was sung with slightly different lyrics by both the Democratic and National (Nazi) parties.
Lila fell asleep.
Isaac really wanted to try the pool, so we took the air mattress given to us by Charlie (veilen dank!) and went next door to the Apartamentos Australia (to a sunnier pool). It was still far too cold more more than a few minutes in the water.
Then it's time to head out to a dinner in the foothills. Mmmm, comidas typicos.
