Burning Man 2002: Miscellaneous
The following two pictures are of an art piece which suggests the Bush government's anti-terror campaign, cynical to be sure, is similar to the German Nazi Party. First I thought it was clever, then I compared it to the famous guide used in the Nazi concentration camps (third image, below), now I think it's a lazy and thoughtless riff on the misery of others.
A close-up of the placard.
The Nazi original. Makes the art piece look more like a copy and less than something inspired. Meh.
[Macro error: Mac OS Error: -1409.]
But getting back to more joyful Burning Man miscellany, here's the last official population count from the official whiteboard: 8/31/2002 8am 29,083 people.
An almost untouched bit of playa (save the single bicycle tire trail on the left side of the photo).
Four lighted lanterns hanging from one of the many lamp-posts lining the main avenues.
A mermaid figurine brandishing a trident.
Black Rock City street intersection markings. Unfortunately, these get ripped down as souvenirs after the Man burns, making patrolling the city even more difficult. (Doubly difficult as most of my shifts are in the evening or at night, with even less points of reference.)
It's what I do right up to our preparations for leaving.
