Burning Man 2002: Playa Shabbos
This is year 5763 in the Jewish calendar. We got traditions :-) It being Friday evening, it was time to head out to join other Jews in celebrating the arrival of the sabbath, transliterated as Shabbos, Shabbas, or Shabbat.
The dust storm having just subsided, it was easy to walk a few blocks to join the gathering congregation. It was a very beautiful evening, marked by a short downpour which took the remaining dust out of the air, with the most awe-inspiring purple and orange sunset as our service started.
There's something about having a Jewish prayer service in the desert. Sublime. I helped prepare a glatt kosher meal, which we all shared. There was a bit of confusion as our hosts scrambled to find tableware and plates for all, but Rangers come prepared: I had a Lexan cup/bowl and spoon in my pack. Mmmm. Good cooking.
After I returned to Camp Vermeer and delivered several gallons of water to a rabbi-to-be in need, I set around to lighting my own candles. Here you see them, planted on the playa, during the lighting phase (which seemed very difficult, given the choppy wind) and burning by themselves. They managed to burn down all the way, into an easy-to-remove puddle.
On the way I saw some cool bicycles.
