2005 Ibiza: Our Finca
Friday 23 September 2005, continued.
Welcome to our home for the next three or so weeks. This finca, a converted farmhouse dating back a hundred years or a bit more, is only a few hundred meters from Daniel's place.
This is the living room, with the main entrance at left, the half-high door to the kitchen in the middle. I'm standing on the steps leading up to one of the bedrooms.
This is the bedroom in which I'm standing. Note the incredibly steep rise of the terra cotta steps at left. That exitway was closed off; it might have brought us to the roof.
This is the view from the living room, looking at (from left to right), the bathroom, the lower bedroom, the stairs, and the entrance.
This is a view across the living room from a vantage point of the bathroom door.
Turning around I see the half-bath; there's a tub just to the left. Notice the round porthole of a window, going through a very thick wall (which tells you something about the state of engineering when they figured out what was necessary for a load-bearing wall).
Here's a close-up. It's like living in a castle!
Here's that tub I was telling you about. Check out the rough-hewn wooden beams making up the ceiling. The bathrooms aren't actually as glamorous as they look because of an almost constant state of drought; the water table is very low from the water use by the hoardes of tourists who flock to the islands each summer.
Now, perhaps, to the best part of the tour: the funny half-high door to the kitchen. That's not a tricked photo, one really has to bend all the way over to get into the kitchen. Above is a cabinet for the glassware for the living room table, should you want to use it as a dining room.
Here's the kitchen. In days of old, during the cold season that half-high door would be sealed off and the fireplace below would heat this room. The sleeping loft would be for the farmers and some of their animals. That eating area is so low that I have to stoop as I get to my chair lest I brain myself on the wooden beams. (I can hardly wait until I can walk around my own house without worrying about hitting my head.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, having something to do with a tardy taxi driver, Omi Marga's car is at the airport instead of in Sant Joan, and we have to go get it.
