2003 London: Where the Shops Are
Tuesday 4 February 2003
Some mornings we wake up gracefully, some mornings without so much cheer. This morning was a cheerful one.
At long last we get a free minute to make some necessary phone calls. It's becomming impossible to find British Telecom phone cards anywhere but a post office, so one has to carry around a lot of spare change to make calls. [Update: I find out late this evening that credit cards aren't charged at a higher price any more, and so they could have made things easier for us. Oh well, next time.]
Rose calls an old friend, who - as it turns out - can't be tracked down by first inital last name. Sigh.
I call an Internet acquaintance from a kilt mailing list. He left his number at the hotel, but alas, his week has been taken up and so we won't be able to get together this time around. Sigh.
That done, we head south, across New Oxford Street, into the shopping district which surrounds Neal Street. This is one of the cosiest parts of London. At left is the Punjab Indian Restaurant, which we've enjoyed on trips past.
We walk one-half block south, at Short's Garden, and one-half block to the right, to Neal's Yard.
Here is what I think is the best damned cheese shop in the whole wide world: Neal's Yard Dairy.
