2003 London: The Natural History Museum
Saturday 1 February 2003, continued
This is the Natural History Museum. It's a beautiful, cold day, and we've popped out from the pedestrian subway to see an open-air viewing of The World from the Air.
The Natural History Museum is in a beautiful building next door to the Science Museum. We're greeted by a dinosaur. We visit the animatronic Tyrannosaurus Rex - which Lila loves and Isaac fears. But there's much more to see here.
We ride up the escalator through a huge metal globe - with a rock soundtrack - to the Earth Sciences wing. The volcano and earthquake displays are impressive, especially the Pele's Hair (magma thrown through the air and spun into what looks like human hair).
There's really a lot to see. We stroll through the material sciences area, and the kids like touching the various types and textures. We cross a suspension bridge, peer at the James Bond technology exhibit, and check out the history of standardized weights and measures. The kids enjoy, but much of it is for an older audience than we have here.
Conveniently situated next door, and free to boot, is the enthusiastically recommended The Science Museum.
