2003 London: Simpsons-in-the-Strand
Monday 3 February 2003
We're finally hitting our stride: almost everyone is hale and hearty. Lila hasn't had diarrhea for 21 hours, and everyone is hungry. So we head out from our Coptic Street digs southward to the Strand - again - this time to have breakfast at the famous Simpsons-in-the-Strand. We ate there three years ago and thought it might be fun to do it once again.
I decided to wear my winter-weight kilt today. Here we are at Covent Gardenst. Lila is wearing three layers plus her pink fleece blanket. Isaac wears another three layers, top and bottom, and puts his cold hands on my neck rather than submit to the indignity of wearing gloves.
On trips I usually carry Isaac in a mountaineering-style backpack carrier, but with all the winter wear it's a bit uncomfortable. These days he asks Papa to let him "ride on your head". It works. Here Rose is guiding Lila's pram (or pushchair) around Covent Gardens.
Finally we make it to Simpsons-in-the-Strand, and during the scheduled breakfast time! Rose chooses a booth for us. Master Isaac is sipping his hot cocoa, Mistress Lila is enjoying a croissant.
While I'm off changing Lila's diapers (err, nappies) Isaac amuses himself with the racks upon which the toast points have been brought.
He's got serious business to do with them. It keeps him busy while several politicians (or businessmen, I can't tell anymore) in the next booth discuss some grand project. One of their voices is the deep, reassuring British voice we associate with the late actor Richard Harris.
Lila, now in her baby chair, savors another croissant (with an attitude). I didn't know she could sneer.
Rose digs into her kippered fish. It turns out to be a challenge, full of bones. She asks me for advice, but I don't have much to give. I don't like complicated food :^)
Isaac takes the digital camera and takes a few photos of the goings on. This is how Lila looks at her big brother.
Next, we head over to the Tower of London.
