Burning Man 1997: Day-trippers of the Playa One of the mottos of the Burning Man festival is No Spectators. Inevitably, of course, visitors arrive who aren't in a frame of mind to participate. These seem to fall into two categories: bemused locals and drunk, immature, young men. We like the locals. They're typically older than we are, and have seen a lot of strange behavior out in the desert. The two thumbnails on this page are of two couples who came in from Gerlach (or was it Empire?) to see the goings-no. If memory serves, this was taken in center camp. The visitors, also known as day-trippers, were having a great conversation with the staff and guests of the eatery, next to the silver rocket car. The drunk, immature youngsters we don't like. They tend to harrass both men and women, are loud for even less reason than the festival participants, and are, in a word, disruptive. Of course, anyone who is a day-tripper, even an annoying one, is welcome to redeem their poor behavior by participating. ![]() ![]()
