Burning Man 2007: A Busy Day
27 September 2007
Because we have a family to take care of, my Ranger duties are carried out in the last part of swing shift and graveyard. Early this morning, just after midnight, Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey arrived at the Black Rock Ranger headquarters to deal with an issue. That's Ranger Daruba, center, and Ranger Feline (of the Echelon department, at right).
Larry talks things over with Ranger Bob and Ranger Crow. Things progress.
Near the Esplanade a platform was built for public performances. Here's a stilt-walking fire-player.
Just behind the Center Camp Café an artist is putting the finishing touches on a glow-in-the-dark painting.
I'm usually patrolling during later swing shift, afte Lila and Isaac are asleep, and grave shift. Nighttime artwork is my major experience of Burning Man (although I do make an effort to see the more impressive pieces during daylight hours).
Nighttime art cars can be sublime, comforting, and invigorating all at the same time. If done properly.
Some are much more than art cars; consider this tricycle penny-farthing.
Some depend upon electrical lighting, others add UV fluorescense to really stand out.
This one, lighted from within, is one of my favorites. I'm brought to thinking about soap bubbles, fireflies, and comfortable cafés. Ummm, maybe that's just me. Perhaps you had to be there.
Hey, here's a treat! Rose, Lila, and Isaac on a nighttime art care. I think Lila is objecting to the loud sounds of something being blown up.
An old favorite over the years, the pirahna art care.
Lastly, the Man, with his color-changing "cowboy boots" (a new addition this year).
The many hues of dawn are painted, as seen from Center Camp, as I'm looking at the Man. From 03:00 to 06:00 seem like the coldest hours on playa, and some of the quietest. It's a nice way to end 9 hours of service to the city.
Here's Central Café just after dawn. Time for a steaming hot chai or hot cocoa. Then it's back to Ranger HQ to pick up a fresh battery and to sign out and get back to camp for a few hours of sleep before the kids wake. And then we'll do it all over again.
