Burning Man 2007: Prologue

20-24 August 2007

There's so much to say about our experiences this year, and no way to actually get it down. There's just not enough meta-time. So you're getting a small bit of the vibe.

One major addition to our Burning Man this year is a huge Aluminet shade structure. For too many years we've been held hostage by the sun, trapped in camping structures not designed for deserts, or those which provide too little shade (which moves too much to be of any real use).

This drawing shows a 20- by 20-foot concept; we wound up with a 20 by 50 reality. That's a lot of poles, heavy poles, made of galvanized steel (to resist the corrosive alkaline playa).

Here you see Isaac and I unloading the pipe sections, which Lila and I just picked up at the Home Depot. Luckily one of our Hapkido folks had an ancient pick-up truck (that was to be sold the following week); thanks Ahn!

A few days later Ranger Lefty and I went to CruiseAmerica in Oakland to pick up the recreational vehicle (RV) we'd rented.

We didn't initially want the FunMover RV we'd been rented, but having the storage area in the back turned out to be perfect for all the pipes and bikes and other items: it meant that the main area was pretty much empty for the humans to enjoy during the trip.

Only an hour or so late, we're underway. Lila loads herself up with snacks.

Here Rose is preparing the kids' homework, which they'll have to do during the trip. The school district requires that they complete the work plus write and illustrate a travelogue. It's a fine price to pay.

It's become a tradition to stop off at one of the Cattlemens restaurants (near Sacramento, California). Isaac has adopted the staff, taking over the operation and handing-out of the "your table is ready" vibrating devices used. The staff is bemused.

In Reno we pick up the drinking water, gasoline, and some last-minute coffee. While gassing up we see our first art car.

We're stopped just outside of Gerlach, Nevada, at the railroad crossing. Patience, patience.

Finally we're on playa, approaching the ticket office. The excitement is palpable, or perhaps it's the playa dust.

Finally we see the Man in the distance, glowing green this year, the color of our ecological theme.

We're home at last.
