2001 Kaua'i: Fri 23 Feb 2001
Heading south towards Poi'pu (to swim at Poi'pu Beach Park), we stop in Koloa. Here was the main sugar cane processing plant, near to the water which took the sweet product to the rest of the world. (Did you know that "C&H Sugar" meant "California and Hawaii Sugar"? It was taken by boat from Hawaii to just north of San Francisco...
![]() In years past a high point of a visit to Koloa was visiting the Broiler Room, the featured attraction of which was a large grill at one corner of the rustic eatery built in the old plantation buildings. One would cook the food ordered (and delivered raw from the "kitchen"). It was a great way of meeting and chatting with folks (while trying not to singe ones eyebrows :-) Sadly, this delightfully quirky restaurant has been replaced with an unappetizingly touristy pizzeria. Sigh. While some change may be for good, sometimes its for nothing more than mediocrity. Let's pause for a minute and mourn the passing of something unusual.
