2001 Kaua'i: Thu 22 Feb 2001

Today we headed north of our home base in Kapa'a toward the Hanalei Valley. Here the taro root is traditionally grown and processed into (among other things) poi. I don't like poi, even though I try it each time I visit. I think it tastes like baked beans which have been boiled until most of the flavor is gone but the color and consistency remains.

We heard a malahini (local, resident) compare poi to sauerkraut, which he couldn't grok when he visited the mainland. I'll have to remember the comparison; having grown up in Germany with sauerkraut I never thought what strange a food it might be to kama'aina (visitor, outsider).
