1995 Eivissa (Ibiza): Alert 'L' of del Plan de Predicción y Vigilancia Meteorológica
Tuesday 26 Sept 1995
This morning I'm sitting in the enclosed part of Fernandito's, wearing long pants and a sweatshirt. The sun is out, but the wind is blowing, and to those unused to any weather other than constant sunshine it feels cold. The stormy weather of yesterday (thumbnail at right) is a lingering unpleasant memory, perceived as a barrier to enjoying the beach. I'm enjoying a caffè con leche while reading today's Diario de Ibiza. Not much to report:
- alert 'L' of del Plan de Predicción y Vigilancia Meteorológica has been extended until 1400
- recent drug busts have netted 1500 kilograms (3,300 pounds) of resina de hachu00EDus on a yacht and (separately) 44 doses of LSD, 5 grams of hashish, and 11 pastillas de éxtasis
- a water commission is assessing the likely future damage of a toxic algae that's spreading through the Mediterrean
- El Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Eivissa is opening a new show by Erwin Bechtold.
Except for the wind, which is howling down the main street of Sant Joan, it's quiet. Most everyone finds a reason to stay home, or rush home as soon as the errand is run. Mothers dropping their children off at school come in for a fortifying beverage or a pack of cigarettes. Around noon things begin to pick up. The attendees of Ra's class arrive for pre-class caffiene, and the lunchtime crowd begins to fill up the indoor spaces.
1545 I just called the USA only to find out that it's 0745, not 0645 as I'd anticipated. (I think we'd all shift our clocks on the same day.) Two of the three people with whom I'd wanted to speak were already out of the house. A wave of frustration and isolation washes over me. If I can't be connected to those I care about and write my book then, damn it, I'd rather be at home. (If I'd planned an isolated trip then I'd mentally be ready for it. But I didn't, and I'm not, and I'm worried because the finances for the latter part of my trip are in the form of advances on royalties. Starting from scratch on my Newton would be difficult; I have so much of my working notes on my PowerBook. I've been using my Newton for a week now; it seems much longer since I've faced a keyboard. If my PowerBook is out of commission much longer I'll consider writing my book on my Newton.
Soon it'll be time to go home and cook dinner. If there's any daylight left after that I'll take some more compass readings and try to plot the location of Daniel & Shraddha's house on the topographical map I recently purchased. I tried last night but the storm interfered. (Time to go across the street and see what the word from Barcelona is.)
The word from Barcelona is underwhelming: we can't do anything but replace the entire placa (motherboard). Ouch. US$500.
We drive home, Daniel and I frustrated with our days. Djamal, with his bottle, waits for us. I'm pleased that I managed to pen my for my Internet Service Provider's monthly newsletter, "Sirius News". We cooked what turns out to be a great spaghetti dinner; all is eaten of my dessert fruit plate. Both of us forget to cook the fresh green beans; it'll have to be a side dish tomorrow.
