Intentionally or not, it was CBS News which rose to the occasion during Gulf War II. Rather than try to make a buck from the event, as did ABC News and it's Yahoo! Premium for-pay video clips, CBS News made available gratis a live web cam around the clock.

Generosity or viral marketing, this video feed gave us an eerie look into the goings-on in a city at the center of the maelstrom. Since it seems to have dissapeared from the front page of cbsnews.com, here's the URL for the webcam and also some moments from that feed, reprinted without permission.

One of the main views. What you can't experience from this still capture is the flying and chirping of the birds, the sight and sounds of the cars driving by, honking drivers, and the occasional car alarm going off.	The same point of view, but pulled back as far as it went. At right you can see two other cameras mounted on tripods. Between them is someone coming out for a break, finishing that can in three pulls.
Baghdad at night. The light blooms are car headlights. There's a lot of traffic within view (and earshot) day and night. I'm not sure I could sleep either. But safer to be on the road or at home?	What I take to be a mosque. You'll see more views of this mosque in upcoming notes...
